Hi, I have just confirmed ancestors that state Holland as their place of birth. These are the first in my tree to be outside of the UK and I would like to know if someone can suggest how I go about finding more info on them. I have them on the 1861 census in Liverpool. They are -
Hostoch Goldsmith, b-1809c, traveller in the tobacco trade
Morris Goldsmith, b-1832c, cigar maker
Rachel Goldsmith, b-1832c,
Nehemiah Goldsmith, b-1835c, cigar maker
Jonas Goldsmith, b-1838c, cigar maker
Isaac Goldsmith, b-1844c, cigar maker
Maria goldsmith, b-1848c, scholar
All born in Holland. There are grand children on there also, Sarah & Henry, both born in Liverpool.

Any help in where to go from here would be very much appreciated
Thank you, Marie.

Marie This site will assist you in tracking your Dutch Family. it is www.genlais .nl It covers all births, Deaths and Marriages from 1750 to 1959 taken from parish records and government data.
The dutch are amazing record keepers and their is far more detail than found in English records. For example marriages show in most cases both mother and Father of Bride and Groom as well if they had been widowed or divorced their previous partners names are shown also Birth and Death Record show Parents and spouses in most cases.

The site is in dutch however you can bring up the front page as English and it is not to difficult to understand the directions. just remember if you a searching a name that has Van or De in front do not enter these prefixes in the main name. It is a Free Site and you only pay if you want to order certificates.

Glad I could help you too Cathy.

Now Marie, on the bar that shows up on the front page click on Searching Genlais a drop down menu will appear click on the instruction topics and when you have read these go back up to the top of the list and click on searching database and your search page will come up.

Don't worry it took me a while to figure out how to change it into English.

Hi kiwibird,

You were right about the info, its great! It looks like you get a lot even without purchasing anything.
Nothing for Goldsmith but I think the name could have been anglicised from Goldsmit or Goldschmidt even, who knows!
Ive saved it to my favourites as i think I may be using quite a bit in the future!

thanks again, Marie

PS. Good luck with your search too Cathy!

Hi Ann of g. g.

I saw that entry and wondered if there was a connection. It was the cigar trade bit that got my attention. Ive made a note of it anyway just in case. Its been hard even finding them on the census so it wouldnt suprise me if they moved about all over the place!
Amsterdam would be a start as all I have is Holland!

Thanks, Marie:)
