hi there,
Just on my final proof read of my finished book. It too is about my late Gran, but also her family before her. It reads like a novel, but each chapter has a titile and in each chapter there are sub headings, so that you can put all the information regarding working in service, or family trials and the sad partings. I also included things from the times, so that people understand the era they are reading about. I each of the chapters are photos of the people and places i.e. churches, graves etc. You can also include information that people have given you. As i presume you just want it for yourself and not into publishing, then you hve no copyright issues on the information you are going to use. If you need any more help, just get in touch.
thanks

I've used the springback binders several times now and they are really good.

As for putting it all together, I didn't find the features on my (old) version of FTM as useful as I hoped. I printed out the trees as Marilyn describes (I did one for each marriage partner), and downloaded a Genealogy Report for each of them, but I then saved that as a Word document, and for each family I typed in additional information as narrative, for example addresses, occupations, snippets of local history, information on siblings and their marriages/children/grandchildren, plus anything else that came to mind. I didn't include many photos as I didn't have them, and to be honest I more or less filled the book anyway.

I also put in my own headings and used colour to highlight the main lines - indigo for males and rose for females. It took a lot of work, but I was pleased with the results - and so were the recipients.

Marilyn what a good idea the Springback Book Binders seem because we are always updating our families records so it would be easy to alter our records without to much disruption. Irene

Hello Quiet...... I borrowed a book from the library Called "Who was your Grannys' Granny " by Diane Marrelli.... Republished as "Meet Your ancestors" Tells the story of her own family research but read like a novel..... If you belong to a library, worth a look.... My local also has a book that gives you tips on writing your family history.

Good luck.

I have put this up before but just an idea but worth thinking about.

I recently bought two Family Tree Spring Binders, one blue, one red, and printed out a tree on several pages, each page says go to page 2, page 3 etc., (printed out from Family Tree Maker). I put in a descendant report and an ancestor report, copies of certficates, any relevant information regarding the ancestors of mum or dad, a family fact sheet for each family and photographs of as many people as I could and things associated with them, the books looked brillant when finished and gave my parents an idea of the work which has gone into the family tree and someting interesting to read.

The spring binders were bought from My History for about £16 each and they look like a real book, you just bend it right back and slip all your sheets in, then it just snaps forward again and grips all the papers. You can get them with Family History printed on the front and spine in gold or the plain ones are cheaper.

It is worth the money and effort if you are stuck for something different and although designed myself (with the help of family tree programmes) it looked perfectly like a book I could have bought from the shop.

They were well pleased with the presents and couldnt stop looking through them.

Hope this helps

Marilyn

If you have a family tree programme like Family Tree Maker it gives you the option of printing your tree out in a book format.
