Can anyone tell me how i can go about finding a persons will he died in 1872.The estranged wife apparently contested it as he left his property to his common law wife.

You might find that the local records office (usually main library) where you live has records of wills (for all of England anyway) , with a bit of detail - certainly Birmingham has these. Worth asking.

You can also find many on the National Archives site, and download a copy for £3.

The Wills on the Documentsonline site are all before 1858.
