Suppose the unwed Mary Jones gives birth to Percival in 1888q1, and rego's the birth, but John Smith, the father, doesn't accompany her to the rego office.
A year later, he decides to acknowledge his kid, so he goes to the rego office and they do the rerego.

What you'll see in the GRO index is liable to be an entry for Percival Jones in 1888q1 and 1889q1, and an entry for Percival Smith 1888q1 and 1889q1. The two 1889 entries might well look quite ordinary, and you might only spot the other by checking that there's 2 Percy's with the same page #. However, the 1888 Jones entry will have a marginal note, maybe "See M 89" where M=March. The 1888 Smith entry will be a footnote addendum, with an "x" next to where it would be in the main text. The footnote might also say See M 89.

Hi,
It means that an alteration has been made to the birth name,,,,which can be one of outright adoption, adoption by a stepparent,....and numbers mean against the birth name means an entry into the ACR has been made,,
No the alterations numbers will serve no purpose for you.

Could somebody please help me? Recently found out that a Aunt had a child out of wedlock which was late adopted. At the side of the childs birth name and reg number etc on the register,
there are handwritten numbers??
What does this other information mean?
Can further details be found using this information??
Many Thanks
