Any thoughts would be much appreciated on this puzzle - I've been trying to work out what the names of the children in this Whalley family are and have got totally confused.

In 1841, I've located James "Whaley" (46) and his wife "Elen" (Helen) (47) on St. Martin Street, Liverpool with children John (17), William (15), James (13), Thomas (11) and Elizabeth (10). They had links to Aughton near Ormskirk, and were Catholics - hence I've found an additional christening for an Elizabeth (1821-1822).

1851, James (b. 1827, "Aften") is living on Douglas Street in Kirkdale, West Derby, Lancashire with Jane (b.1826, Runcorn, Cheshire). Two sons are there - "Thipern" aged 1 and James aged 3m, both b. Kirkdale. I can't work out what "Thipern's" name should be and can't find a likely birth registration for either child. (The census form says Kirkdale should come under West Derby).

The same year, James senior (aged 64, b. Bickerstaffe), Helen (aged 53, b. "Magu" - should be Maghull?) are at Boundry Place, Kirkdale with daughters "B." (aged 19, b. Walton) and what looks like "W" or "H Whalley" (aged 4, b. Liverpool).

What I am trying to work out is the likely name of James and Helen's child "W. Whalley", who appears to be a girl - I can trace all of the children this far forward and thought the two girls may have married but this "W. Whalley" or "H. Whalley" would only be 14 and I can't find a birth registration that looks like it might be her.

The only remote possibility is an Ellen Whalley, working as a servant on 36 Stafford Street, Liverpool who is 15 and b. Liverpool but I'm not sure if she fits.

I read your Thipern's name clearly as Thomas.

Now, Thomas would make sense - I was thinking of "Stephen" because I thought I could see a "p" or "ph" but Thomas would be logical, because that's what James (1828)'s father was called.

Just thought I'd found something interesting before about James and Jane Whalley till I worked them back and they had the wrong father/father-in-law!

Thanks for the second opinions - the image wasn't the clearest on FindMyPast.
