Can anyone tell me what the next steps are when you can't find an Australian (Victorian) birth certificate via the BDM office? I am searching for my grandfather John Joseph Dennis Williamson (b. 12 Dec 1917) and his father Joseph Patrick Adderley, who changed his name to Joseph Patrick Williamson (1873-1941). I have marriage certificates for both of these men (though only one for Joseph who married 3 times) but can't find birth certificates. I need these to try and trace their lineage. Any ideas? Also, any ideas where I can find out when he startted using the Williamson name? Thaks in advance.

Just a suggestion.....Regarding Joseph Patrick Williamson.

Its possible he was born Joseph Patrick "Adderley" Williamson....OR...its a hand me down family name.

For instance..... If he was born o/seas.... ie: ( U.K ) some immigrants carried there mothers or grandmothers maiden name to new countries of settlement. Some immigrants went even as far as adding their birth place to their name ( There is also a village "Adderley" in Shropshire, England ).......This was not an unusual thing to do, and its also possible as another suggestion.....that one of his ancestors was an "Adderley" and the name handed down through the generations.....As you can see he... Joseph has handed it to his son John Joseph Dennis Adderley Williamson

This appears to be a sibling of John Joseph Dennis Adderley Williamson....who has been given his mothers maiden name ( MAGUIRE) as a second name.

My grandmother b.1888 came to Australia and did use, and many of her siblings/cousins/2nd cousins.ect.... used the name "Burrow" in their forenames...handed down through the generations from 1700 in Yorkshire..of my 4x great grandmother Jane Burrow

I am not saying this is conclusive in your case without further investigation...but worth thinking about.

Tony....:>))
ps. my great grandmother was a Williamson ( Essex )

Thanks so much for your help, everyone, this is FABULOUS information, and will be so exciting for my dad. I did not check this site until today, not realising that I needed to check back for responses. I thought they would go into my email inbox...hence the slow response from me. I just figured nobody had answered.

Really appreciate the wonderful assistance you have all given me.
