More information from the actual register

Name: Henry Doughton

Estimated birth year: abt 1866
Spouse Name: Ann Alice Wilson
Record Type: Marriage
Event Date: 10 Sep 1866
Parish: St Saviour, Paddington
County: Middlesex
Borough: Westminster
Father Name: Henry Doughton
Spouse Father Name: William Wilson labourer

from image:-

Henry

Of Full Age
Bachelor
Occupation:- Shoemaker
Address:- 4 Warwick Place

Father's occupation:- Shoemaker

Ann Alice

Of Full Age
Spinster
No occupation given
Address:- 4 Warwick Place

Father's occupation:- Labourer

Witnesses:- Joseph Walker and Elizabeth Walker

everyone could sign their names

BUT Joseph and Elizabeth Walker also signed another certificate on one of the 2 pages showing on the image .... so they may have been what is often called "professional" witnesses ...... people who were paid a small sum to witness the marriage, rather than actual friends or relations of the the couple.

Of Full Age ...... means over 21

Couples often gave the same address if one of them actually lived in another parish ....... it saved money!

I'd like to see if we can find Ann Alice Doughton on the 1871 Census. I did have a look and couldn't see her

Yes, you're right. Note that the late refers to her naming status, not Mr Doughton's mortal status. It would say the same whether she was a widow or divorcee, although, given the date, she was probably a widow.

Hi Steve

That would be right what your'e thinking, Ann Alice Wilson married a Doughton and then after her husbands death she marries again to a mr Jones. If you put some names ,dates and places on your thread, you will get some good help from people on here. Does your great grand mother have a father (Jones) named on the certificate ?

Steven Report 10 Jun 2010 23:55

Hi everyone. Bit of a novice but learning! had a birth certificate for my great grandmother, not got very far yet, and have a question on her mothers name. The entry under column 5 for mothers name and maiden name it has:

ann
alice
jones
late
doughton
formerly
wilson

would I be right in thinking that she had been married before? to a mr Doughton, but had been born a wilson?

any help gratefully recieved

thanks
