Aah, thanks, I get it - I'm still a learner at all this. I'll go and see if she was re-registered - thanks.

Amanda, there is no standard "code" for errors, they are just registered numerically as they occur in the registrars correction book.

Kay means check the birth index's for the birth after the parents marriage to see if the child was re-registered under the fathers surname later.

Thanks for all your tips. I think I will ring the local RO to see if there is a standard list of numbers and maybe they can also advise me on any file papers/internal records too.
Kay - I'm not sure if you mean to check the baby's parents marriage cert or take a closer look at her own birth cert?
Thanks everyone.

I thought they just used #s off a standard list of alteration reasons - anyways, phone the local rego office and they can tell you.

Oh yes I see. The baby was called by her 'father's' surname in all the censuses but not on the free bmd search for her birth (registered under her mother's surname). Do you know where i could find the file pages with the reasons for the errors (just to be sure) ?
Thanks both of you for your help.

its the cross ref number to the file pages where the info has been recorded that caused the birth cert to be altered ,would guess one is the crossing out of the fathers name because they werent married, and the other is means the childs surname isnt that of the father as the child was illigitimate

Basically the errors are numbered.

The Registrar would have have a record of all the numbers and why the errors occured

Sure someone else can explain it better

Does anyone know what the code numbers 22 and 23 on a Birth Certificate mean?
I have a Birth Certificate for my Great Grandma with her 'father's' name crossed out and the numbers 22 & 23 written next to his crossed out name and the Registrar has initialed this at the side. I know the baby's mother (my gt gt grandma) was unmarried at the time but subsequently married the man (whose name was crossed out) 18 months after the birth of this baby.
Thanks for any help anyone can give on this.
