it is possible that only about 30% of the records have survived, and many of these are damaged and/or incomplete.

The records were moved from the Department of Defense to another building in London at the beginning of WW2 for safekeeping

The building was bombed

Surviving records were then moved to a building at Kew

There was a fire

I think one is very lucky to find anything!!

it seems that it is often possible to find a man's name on the Medal Rolls more often than on the service records.

Try putting in less rather than more

..... many men only used one name rather than 2, or used initials

place of birth is often missing

residence is often missing

Something like 50% or more of WW1 military records were destroyed during WW2 so its possible his records were among the lost records.

You could Google the regiment and see if there any museum records that might help you.

Also try putting his name into the London Gazette WW1 archives and see if anything comes up.

Have you looked for him on the medals list?
Many of the military records are missing. I have not been able to find notes on several people who I know served in the 1914-1918 war.

I would think that his age suggests that he did serve, but sometimes the men changed numbers when they joined a different group.
Have you searched for him by name alone and then looked at the images. Sometimes forenames were left out, ..or added.. making it unclear if you have found the correct person, ..until you read the pages of information about him.

Hello i have a marriage cert and on it the occupation of the groom is a private with his number and reg.

They married in 1920 but cannot find him on the ancestry military records. He was 25 so i think he would have been in the great war.
Would this mean maybe he was not in the war and joined after?

Thank you in advance
