Just found out that I have Irish relatives but I don't know which web sites to look on. Could anyone point me in the right direction? I don't know which part of Ireland.

I'm afraid I don't have very much to go on but here goes. Catherine Callaghan born 1820 somewhere in Ireland. She married Alexander Sutherland who was I think from Edinburgh. I don't know whether they married in Scotland or Ireland. They had 3 children one of them born in Ireland - Alexander Sutherland approx 1846

I checked ScotlandsPeople and there are no matches either in the parish Records Marriage/Banns (up to 1854) or thereafter in the Marriage records.

This could well be who you are looking for!

Head of Household: Catherine Sutherland 30 Washer Woman Born Ireland
Difficult to see if M for Married or W for Widow.
Husband absent from census.

Alexander son age 5 b Ireland
Angus son 10 b Ireland

John son 8 b (looks like) Purshill Midlothian
James 2 b Purshill Midlothian

Jean Gallagher Sister 21 b Ireland
John Gallagher Brother 19 b Ireland.

Could be the family of Catherine Sutherland ms Gallagher!

Register with ScotlandsPeople (free) you may wish to pursue this and later censuses or order the certificate using the GROS number above.

Searching is free but to view results costs 20p and Images £1.
Credits are purchased at 30 for £6

I realise you have Callaghan, but this looks much like a coincidence.

I too had some problems finding Irish ancestors but found Emerald Ancestors to be a useful site.
Also people on these boards were fantastic.
