I think I must be having a senior moment and/or a mental block.

It's so long since I did this, i've completely forgotten how - I want to search the census by address only.
I've got Ancestry and I'm messing about with it trying to get a particular address to come up, but I'm obviously doing something totally stupid!
Help please.

You can only search by address on the 1881 census.

So is the 1881 UK census the only one on Ancestry that is searchable by address?

Well no it isn't, they all are if you have determination and patience. Here is how you can do it:

1) On Ancestry click on the census year then on the one (England, Wales ect) that you are interested in.

2) Look to the right and you will see 'Please choose a county'.

3) Choose the County, the civil parish and if necessary the sub registration district (The larger the place the more districts there will be) that you are interested in.

4) By the side of each district you will see, 'View description of enumeration district'

5) As you click on each of those in turn you will be presented with a sheet from the enumerators book containing details of the roads, streets, buildings which are covered in that district.

6) Once you have discovered which district covers the place that you are interested in go back and click on that district number.

7) Check each sheet until you discover the place/address you are looking for.

Many earlier returns only have folio numbers rather than house numbers but with a bit of effort using such places as public houses as a guide it is often possible to identify what the house number may have been.

It can be a long winded process but it can be rewarding.

I followed these instructions yesterday and the 'please find a county etc' is now in a panel to the right.

It took me ages to do but I did find what I wanted to know

Thanks for pointing that out Wendy. It has been so long since I have had to follow my own instructions that I had not noticed that Ancestry had moved the position of "Please choose a County". Sneaky so & so's (lol).

EDIT: I have altered the instructions to save any confusion.

Also, above the image you'll see something like:
Lancashire > Oldham > Oldham Above Town > 6 > 29
You can click on various links in that to take you there, too.

Just to say that not all enumerators were very good at describing their patches.
