Thank you all - just realised that someone on my relatives 1911 census transcription described as a "music monthly" is a nurse monthly!

That was why many women went home to their mothers to give birth. You can often find the previous generation in the place of birth given in the census records.

Monthly Nurse

An attending woman during the first month after childbirth. Also known as 'Confinement Nurse'. May also have the initials S.M.S. (Subsidiary Medical Services. i.e. not a doctor, but trained in some way)

I know my Nan stayed indoors for at least a week, and they were very working class, so it was pretty common even in the 20's. When I was born (1954) she was very cross with Mum for getting out of bed the next day!

We've got quite an interesting book about women's health that seems to date from some time after c.1927 which actually has a whole section about what qualities to look for when choosing your monthly nurse ie. somebody companionable and cheerful but "it is not many who like a great talker" etc, but I suspect this book was probably aimed more at middle/upper class women because it says that after giving birth the new mother should stay in her room for a month (hence the term "confinement", I suppose).

I reckon more working class women probably wouldn't have had the luxury of being able to spend a month away from household duties and looking after the other children etc, but I could be wrong. Maybe it just depended on the individual woman?

I don't think monthly nurses necessarily delivered babies (that might have been more of a midwife's responsibility) but they might have known how to in an emergency.

Dare I ask what is this?
