Marriage Cert Alterations?

I have acquired a copy of a marriage cert for a relative in 1898 in Wrexham Register Office. On the line that starts "Married in...." the usual notation of "...by Certified Licence by me, ..." has been altered. The word Certified has been crossed though and the number '5' appended above and 'by me' has been changed to 'before me'. There is also a margin note of 'Five' initialled by the registrar. Does anyone know what this signifies?

Most Register Office marriage certs I have even up to 1940s and beyond have **before me ** and crossed out **by me,**
it could have been by special licence ,the numbers are whats used to indicate that something has been altered to the original entry ,either by written down wrong or a mistake by information and its been corrected and initialled by her/him.

Stephen,

The number 5 has no particular significance beyond the fact that it is the fifth emendation made in the register. Several of my certificates have corrections and it seems that these correcctions had to be listed separately; hence the sequence of numbers.

Thank you both for your replies.

I thik I have it sorted now. The Registrar appears to have started to write Certificate and has crossed it through and written Licence instead. The appended number '5' which is confirmed and initialled in the margin just records this alteration. This indicates that they got married quickly!

Interesting.
