Well this looks to be the same family but in 1861..

Piece: RG9/2130 Place: Ladywood -Warwickshire Enumeration District: 13
Civil Parish: Ladywood Ecclesiastical Parish: St Barnabas
Folio: 7 Page: 7 Schedule: 34
Address: 18 Crt Bk 52 Grosvenor St W

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Surname First name(s) Rel Status Sex Age Occupation Where Born Remarks
ROATH Jane Head W F 48 Laundress Warwickshire - Birmingham
ROATH Mary A. Dau U F 28 Burnisher Warwickshire - Birmingham
ROATH George Son U M 20 Metal Smith Wales - -
ROATH Charles Son U M 17 Tin Plate Worker Wales - -

ROATH Henry Grnson U M 4 Scholar Warwickshire - Birmingham

Seems to confirm William IS Janes son.
Does the address match up with Johns marriage cert. from 1857 to Rosanna?

If the James Roath death you have found in 1847 is him, then he`s obviously not the father of william 9 months on the 1851 census...Wonder if he`s the son of daughter Mary Ann age 18....sorry havn`t got Census access at the moment so can`t check the image....Is there anyone else who could do that please?

Another way may be to track the mother Jane Roath through the census up till her death, and then order the cert.....it may say wife/widow of James Roath .

I've found a death for James in 1847. But I'm not really in my thinking mode at the moment as I have to go out soon an won't be back till tonight.

Hi Jill,

Yes I think the baptisms I gave you do match the family you have found in 1851, but wether that is YOUR John and his family I don`t know.

Do you know John mothers maiden name? if so the birth cert. of one of the younger children would confirm it.

Also I notice on that census that youngest child William is only 9 months old.......does that match up to father James death being in the previous 18 months?
Are the family on the 1841 census?

The only other explanation I can come up with is that John James Roath born and baptised 1833/1834 died by 1837, and then there was another son born c1837 who they gave the same name to.....that was very common practice......

I think you need to try and get a look at the ST Philips records and see if you can find the john born 1837 on them.

Sorry, Nicky, I was called away last night and then went to bed.
Thank you again for your last posting. I think that is most likely the family, but if it IS the right John he never used the middle name again and always gave a birth date of some 4-5 years later, so I'm not sure that is final proof he is one and the same John. What do you think?
If you are right about the siblings that would link up with other Roaths in Birmingham.
It was also probably the Jane Roath (wid) who appeared on the 1851 census with
Mary Ann 18,
Richard, 15,
John 13, (Who were all burnishers as 'my' John was throughout his recorded life) also
George 9,
CHarles 6,
William 9mth

What do you think?
thanks again
Jill

These are all the children baptised between 1830 and 1837 born to James and Jane Roath....i also found a possible marriage for them in 1830.

Could these others be his siblings??

I think I am going to have to resort to Parish records to find John, but I did want to try and pin him down a bit more. I did wonder if he had knocked a few years off his age and was actually born in 1833. Although the ages are consistent in all the records.
My grandfather. Bert Roath, didn't know his age or his birthday until he sent for his birth cert to claim his pension.

Yes, Dessey Rosanna was my grandfather's sister!
She was the daughter of George Roath, son of John.

Well, that's a thought! I hadn't followed the Harriet marriage at all as my line came through his first wife, Rosanna via George Roath. But I bet youre right about ANOTHER marriage. I must get round to counting all his children by four wives.

I don't think so Nicky. That family are on the 1891 census with a wife called Ellen who hasn't shown on my radar yet.

So your not sure the 1911 entry I gave is him ?

Is Stanley the Coachman in 1911, not the same one in 1881 age 1?

Sorry Gwyn, I forgot to say his father was James - hence I was alerted by the IGI of John son of James and Jane but the birth date was earlier.

That's the one,PollyPoppet!

His marriage cert. will give his fathers name....Have you located him in 1841 and 1851 with his parents? Maybe the age given will help you narrow down the search if it is consistent with 1837 like the others...
