Hello all
I have had a kind person looking on the 1911 census for a family member with no listing and yet I find them later on other records. I believe this family member was working in a stately home, would that make difference to the census? Does anyone know the answers please?

Entering too much information can hamper results.also a mistranscribe of surnames,,,have you tired with just an initial?

Yes I have been trying on free 1911 look ups too with variants the closest I got to was her married surname but she didn't get married until 1912 and the date of birth was out by a couple of years too.

It could be a bad mis-transcription. Have you tried searching by first/surname only? Just checking - are you certain about when she married?

They could also have just been left off.
I had been looking for my ex husbands grandmother, I knew she was'nt married, but she was 18.
I found her parents on thier own and the other week just thought I would look at the origanal to see how many children they did have.

And there she was.....I told FMP and recieved an email saying on this occasion they would amend it, not there yet

Thank you I am certain of the marriage, although she is down as her nickname Jinney instead of Jane and surname spelled slightly differently but definately her. I may just search for parents though I think I had done that but will try again just in case!
Thanks again

Even if the person was working in a stately home in 1911 then they should be listed.

If it was a large 'stately' household then I do wonder about who got the job of filling in the schedule?

Would the head of household really fill in the form noting everyone down to, for example, a scullery maid?.....Would he know a scullery maid's name let alone her place of birth?

I can imagine he would ask his Butler or Housekeeper for the info, but that would then rely on their knowledge.

My grandmother was working in a large household in 1911. Her name was written very poorly, so surname transcribed as Tigge instead of Legge! (many thanks to the person on here who found her for me).
Maybe you could post her details if you are really stuck?

Thank you Chris, Jan and Maureen for your replies interesting to say the least. Thank you especially Maureen as that definately looks like my Jinney/Jane/Jennie Sparkes, although I can't see her future husband on the National Archive register that you kindly found. His name was Thomas M Massey and I understand that he went to war after marriage in 1912 never to return, presumed dead! Perhaps from the 1911 info they had indeed not yet met! Thank you again
