My gg grandfather was born in Scotland, after tracing him on Scotlands people his father was born in Scotland but then all ancestry going back is from Ireland, Sarah Potts appears on the 1861 Census with her family in Wigtown Scotland, how do I go about tracing them in Ireland, none of the Census forms tells you what part of Ireland they are from

Hi Angela, did Sarah Potts die in Scotland, if so then find her death on Scotlands People. It just may give you some more information.

Her mother Helen died in Scotland in 1870, it gives her husband and her parents name unfortunately the copy is very hard to read, thanks for your advice, think Sarah moved to England with her family.

Angela...Was Sarah b Scotland or Ireland...? Can you put her parents names on the thread...You may possibly be looking at the Co.Down...

Hi this is the information that I know to be correct from Scotlands People records and Parish records. 1861 Census Scotland. Ellen Potts aged 80 head Ag Labour on Farm in Wigtownshire from death cert died in 1870 head of family widow of Andrew Potts, father listed on death cert as Joseph Spiers and mother as Martha Spiers nee McMillan or Millan (hard to decipher). Jane dau aged 45 Ireland. William 26 Ireland. Sarah Gdau aged 18 Ireland, GG Gdau Sarah Jane Edgar aged 5 Wigtownshire. Sarah married John Templeton in 1863, fathers name is blank mother is Jane their son Alexander was bn in 1863. This family does not appear that I can see in any earlier Census Thank you for your time.
