If the child has drawn breath, if only for a few seconds, then it should have a birth and death registered. If it was dead when born - and after 24 weeks pregnancy then it should have been recorded as stillborn, with no death cert. Prior to 24 weeks then no registration.

Some local authorities provide a lot of useful info. This one is particularly comprehensive.

I was helping someone on here and the death of the stillborn child was registered normally.

Hi Pauline

Have recently ordered a still birth certificate to-day. You need to telephone the Identity & Passport Service on 0845 603 7788 to request a form. Only parents of the still born baby can obtain a certificate unless they have both died then a certificate can be obtained by a sibling as long as you have the dates of birth of the mother and father.

You can also email them at [email protected].

I am hoping that I have got the correct date as they will only search one year either side of the date you give. They were extremely helpful to me and even telephoned me to ask some further information as they could not find it and did a fair bit of searching for me.

Good luck

Sue

this is what is says on direct gov, only parents of the stillborn child or the stillborn child's siblings can apply

Order a stillbirth certificateDue to the sensitive nature of stillbirth registrations, only the mother or father of the child is able to apply for a certificate. The parent must be named on the birth certificate to do this. Should the parents be deceased, a brother or sister can apply if they can provide their parents’ dates of death.
How long will it take?
Your certificate is sent within 15 days of receipt of your application.
