wow thanks Sylvia, that is a great help. i think i need to join this ancestry everyone refers to. is it Ancestry.co.uk??

i think the reson that Henry James doesnt show on the census is probably due to the fact he was a ship steward so was possibly at sea a lot.

i think you definately have the correct info here as i know from their marriage that henrys father was called charles and was a tailor

many thanks indeed x

I've been trying to find Henry James and Matilda together on a census ............... without much success

This looks as though it ahs to be him, as a boy

Relation: Son
Father's Name: Charles
Gender: Male
Where born: City St Michael, Worcestershire, England

Civil parish: Worcester St Peter

There are at least 3 trees on ancestry that have Matilda and Martha, and other children ..... none of them have the name of a husband for Matilda!

thank you everyone, sorry i'm new to the boards and didnt expect such a quick response! i have no idea when they married and can only guess the area.

i will try the website you suggested and if that fails i will order a birth or marriage certificate of one of their children

the only info i have is Matilda unknown b 1842 in soho, middlesex and she died 1920 in Poplar. her husbands name is APPS. its the Apps line i'm most interested in.

thanks again everyone

his first name should be on the marriage index, surely?

what was her maiden name & where did they marry?

Thelma

Thelma Report 7 Jul 2010 23:16

Actually ;Go on Freebmd enter his surname and her given name, chose the approx year span and area to get her maiden and find her in census before marriage. If it tallies with the 1881 then you have his name.

Pam Report 7 Jul 2010 23:08

Try marriages on

http://freebmd.rootsweb.com

Enter the surname and place if you know it...then it is just a case of checking through them

It is free to use the above site.

Thelma

Thelma Report 7 Jul 2010 23:06

Why not buy a birth cert. of one of the children.
His name will also be on the childrens marriage certs.

Hi, please help! i don't know the first name of my ancestor only the surname. i can find his wife and children on the 1871 and 1881 census but by 1891 she was widowed. i can't search earlier census as they were married after the 1861 census and all i have for him is his surname. does anyone know how i can search for him another way please?
