I wonder if anyone knows if Poll or Polly is a real name. I had an Aunt Poll and I know she was my ancestor but I cannot find trace of that name, is it a nickname? Anyone know please?

as mistycat says but it could be a name you never know

"Polly" is a nickname for Mary, which was derived from another nickname for Mary, Molly. It is sometimes used as a name in its own right.

it could be short for Pauline

It could be a family nickname

OR it could be a name in its own right

Who were her siblings and when were they born? Do you know the mother's maiden name?

Thanks everyone who replied I do have a Mary so that may be the one also an Alice and Sarahs sibling. Rose the surname is Lewis and she was born 1892 and her sister 1867 she also had brothers. I have got the family in my tree but obviously that was a nickname.

Sorry I didn't reply before was having a rubbish night sleeping and after I posted my computer went down!

Was she the youngest? 25 years between siblings is a big difference.

Hello Rose, yes I noted that too and thought it strange and I wondered if Alice may have been a sister of Mary's Mother. I had this information from a family member but I havn't clarified for myself yet. I seem to be wobbling from one side of my tree to the other as I glean bits of information.

For some reason as soon as I read this I thought Margaret. Can't explain why, just came to me straight away.

Don't be too surprised about the age gap between the siblings ... I have one lot where first child born in 1816 and last child born 1842.

Well my goodness! It's not easy is it this research thing? Good you all have the same problem as me and I am not alone. I think I will plump for Mary/Poll for now and research the sister age thing too. Thank you very much for the fun replys.
