Hi Dee

Thanks very much for that. I know about David Twitchell and I just found it very confusing because I couldn't work out the relationship. I did start getting suspicious about the children being born without their dad ever materialising on the censues but I have long since decided that probably wasn't the case. I have one of the children's birth certs (gt gt grandmother) and she was born 1854 and her father was John Parkes.

I really don't know re the Twitchell's, I could nt work it out when I looked (some time ago) and I'm still confused, lol

I found John Thorne Gwyer, and his occupation is an Accountant! His fathers was also the same and John T Gwyer was born in 1820 in Clifton.

So maybe the Parks family you found in 1841 could be the correct family and the details are incorrect for the occupations on the marriage certificate??? It wouldn't be the first time info was incorrect.

In the 1841 census, Mary Ann is found with her baby son. In fact her husand doesn't appear in any census with her because it appears he is following work around the country. In 1854 he is on a child's birth certificate as Shipwright and the family are living in London.

I thought I would try to find their fathers in the 1841 census but have little information to go on. As Mary Ann records her birth as the Bedminster area I would guess that her father (shipwright) would still be working in the same area less than 2 years after she's married. John's father's occupation is likely to be related to the ships as well although not necessarily, nevertheless, I would expect he would have remained in the same area so that's where I am at the moment. In Bristol with skant information.

These are the marriage details:

9 Oct 1838, John Parks (although this spelling varies and usually includes an e) full age, bacheloe, shipwright, residence Bedminster, father John Parks, occupation Smith

Mary Ann Harding full age, spinster residence Bedminster, father Richard Harding, occupation Ship Wright

married a the Parish of St. Stephen, Bristol

witnesses Elizabeth Fowler and John Thorne Gwyer

to be continued ....

Thanks everyone.

I'm looking for John Parks/Parkes who was a Smith at the time of his daughter's marriage in October 1838, Bedminster, Brisol. I'm guessing that less than two years' later he would be of the same or related occupation.

I'll keep looking.

Could the 1st word be surveyor?? In view of later job unlikely to be my 1st thought of Journeyman.

Hello

I am rubbish at deciphering handwriting.

Can someone please tell me what they think the occupation is of someone. I'm looking at the 1841 England census:

John Park
born 1801

Source Citation: Class: HO107; Piece 376; Book: 7; Civil Parish: Bedminster; County: Somerset; Enumeration District: 14; Folio: 16; Page: 27; Line: 10; GSU roll: 288785.

Thanks
