It is a shame that the family search records are not as complete as the baptism and marriage records from the London Metropilitan Archive.

I haven't found anything on the new site that is new to me but I live in hope that the one small piece of information I cannot find will one day appear on the LDS site.

Someone was writing in Your Family Tree Magazine complaining that the new IGI site was full of errors that weren't there previously.

The contributors main contention was that some records now have a "race" category and cites examples of where incorrect assumptions have been made in records for Colonial India. She also suggests that the IGI would do better including information from the original documents such as professions, witnesses at weddings and causes of death, and to provide the facility to report errors or conflicting information.

There are now two Family Search sites :

www.familysearch.org

http://beta.familysearch.org

The beta site is the location for all the information they are currently scanning.

Thanks for your suggestions mngy and ozi. Richard thank you also for taking such time. I had noted the other four and the marriage that you refer to to, but thought it may be a bit far. I hadn't seen the other brother and not quite not sure what you mean by the new site? Guess the only way to solve this is making a trip to the archives, but they're some 100 miles from me. regards Anthony

I would say that it's as Ozi stated above. Probably the transcriber couldn't decide if Cornelius was William's middle name or if it was the family surname. There are several other records on the old IGI that would appear to be from the same family (all have parents Richard & Mary, no surname given):

Elizabeth Cornelius -
Gender: Female Christening: 01 FEB 1778 Hougham, Kent, England

Emblan Cornelius -
Gender: Female Christening: 30 DEC 1781 Hougham, Kent, England

Sarah Cornelius -
Gender: Female Christening: 14 DEC 1783 Hougham, Kent, England

Mary Cornelius -
Gender: Female Christening: 22 FEB 1789 Hougham, Kent, England

... as well as William and another brother on the new site:

Name: William Cornelias
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 29 May 1791
Baptism/Christening Place: Hougham, Kent, England
Father's Name: Richard
Mother's Name: Mary

Name: Joseph Cornelius
Gender: Male
Baptism/Christening Date: 29 May 1791
Baptism/Christening Place: Hougham, Kent, England
Father's Name: Richard
Mother's Name: Mary

Possible marriage for the parents (though Little Chart is ~20 miles from Hougham):

RICHARD CORNELIUS
Spouse: MARY HODGSOME
Marriage: 12 JAN 1775 Little Chart, Kent, England

cheers,
Richard

Many parish records will have, for example, ...

William Cornelius, son of Richard and Mary.

Therefore implying that Richard's surname is Cornelius. You'll be lucky to find Mary's surname.

Normally, very low - but since they've omitted it, it might really be missing. The transcribers are also instructed to leave blank any indecipherable stuff, so that's quite a possibility here. Maybe the bishop's transcripts might clear it up.

Having been given excellent advice yesterday regarding searches on the LDS site's Record Pilot search I played around with this site and found what may have been an ancestor in William Cornelius bpt at Hougham Kent in 1791. Albeit there is a batch number the record only gives the parents as having been Richard and Mary. What's the likelihood of the PR only having the given names of the parents as well??
