Advice on 1911 census

I found the 1911 a bit tricky to begin with but now I enjoy using it. Don't forget - the free search facility is usually far better, so if you get stuck try that then go back to the subscription page and look up your findings. I usually have both on the go at the same time, as I suspect most people do!

Thanks for that bit of info Christine. I think I'll go for the main site and take the 6 month subsciption. Although I only can think of a couple of people I want to get, I know me and I will get more involved than I think.

Either way I can always use it to look up for others!

You don't get the actual household image on GR for the 1911 only the transcription.

You can get an image of the Enumerator's book for the street but that only gives the head of households surname, address and number of males and females in the house.

""avoid GR, I understand it's troublesome! And it only directs you to the offiical site anyway""

Just be a bit careful making these sort of sweeping comments without having first hand facts before you.GR is part of the same organisation that has sole rights to the 1911 census. So it is only logical that it directs you to the "official" site, is it not?

Do you have first hand experience of GR's Gold and Premium services?

I don't, which is why I reserve opinion as to whether it is good bad or indifferent..

By the way, the main way to search is by name but with a bit of effort you can search addresses to. Jonesey has a couple of good threads on this, will dig them out for you.

No, it's the official site - avoid GR, I understand it's troublesome! And it only directs you to the offiical site anyway:

A hint - doing a "free search" is often better before you go spending credits. You'll see what I mean when you look at home page.

I have a sub and have used it loads, so think carefully- you might get the bug!

Thanks Jan

Is that the 1911 on GR?

Well, if you only have a few to view you might be better with credits:

" How much does it cost to view an image?

Viewing the images of the household pages uses 30 credits, which costs from £2.50 to £3.48, depending on the package of credits that you buy."

Sub cost is £39.95 for 6 months. But you effectively have unlimited access if you are only looking for your own family.

I haven't used the 1911 census and I'd like some advice from those of you have as to which would be best to use.

I need to check a few things on the 1911 census, I don't need a long subscription so was thinking a pay per view, or a short period.

Are the images available on all the sites offering access?
and is it searchable by name or just by address?

I'd like to do this so that I can download images if possible.

Thanks, Karen
