Send a few details to remind me if you want..

OH found a lost (since 1930s) grandfather on a passenger list arriving on a ship from South Africa with a wife and child.

I wonder if she knew of the wife and family waiting back in Aberdeen....?

anyone can change their name, without recording it officially anywhere. I used to often see adverts in my local newspaper back in the 50s and 60s (before I left the UK) which basically stated soemthing like

I xxxx xxxxx will henceforth be known as zzzzz zzzzz, and will not be responsible for any debts in my name.

As long as a name change is not for any criminal activity, then it is perfectly legal to change it ............... as long as you let places such as banks know ..... unless you want to lose access to your accounts!

It is not unusual to find ancestors who have changed their names, for reasons now unknown.

Some name changes are recorded in the London Gazette:

Some people change their name by Deed Poll. I'm not sure where these records are kept. However, lots of people change their name without doing it officially. You can call yourself anything you choose as long as it is not for the purpose of defrauding anyone.

Have a look here - it might help:-

Does anyone know if there is a record kept of name changes? If so where would I be able to access it? Thanks!
