Poppycat, don't forget you can get a 25% discount if you buy your Ancestry subscription through the Quidco website. That's quite a big saving for you.

One useful and informative site for pre WW1 military reacords is the Asplin Military History Resources, (link below). This is a free site but covers Boer War and other casualties, military BMD's etc. Pre WW1 UK military records can be difficult to research and this probably one of the best informed sites of it's kind.

Hi poppycat,

Why not try a two week free trial with Ancestry. Although you have to provide card details, if you cancel before the two weeks are up it will have cost you nothing. This way you will know if Ancestry is for you. Personally I wouldn't be without it.

As for knowing how reliable they are when you contact them after a year as you wouldn't want to renew, I couldn't say but I have heard it's not a problem cancelling the two week free trial.

Good luck with your research

Ancestry is by far the most popular, indeed I have subscribed for several years and would not be without. However, the main reason I subscribe is for BMD's from 1837 to date and Census returns,.

There are no BMD's before 1837 so you have to look at the parish registers. for Baptisms, Marriages and possible Burials. A good place to start for this is Family Search, which is free. Also known as the IGI or International Genealogical Index.

There are many other sites which have Church Records too, often linked to particular areas in the country, so it depends where your interests lie.

You might want to try http://www.freereg.org.uk/ which is part of Free BMD, or the On-line Parish Clerks Project which has separate sub-sites for each County.

I don't have any experience in searching for pre-WW1 Military, but perhaps there are other members who can advise.

Can someone advise me please i have finally saved up for a years Sub.
All my past Families are UK Born, & Ireland.

I'm interested in BMD's before 1837, Military before WW1.

Who would i benefit from....Ancestry or FMP, OR OTHER?

One other thing i do worry about is ...when the year is almost up i will want to contact them as not to renew for another year.... i do not want them to help themselves into my pocket...........................
How reliable are they?
