Mr grandfather, SAMUEL BIRD service no 90164 was a private in the 6th Batallion Manchester Regiment in 1920. Has anyone any idea how I can trace when he was discharged from the army?

Any pointers would help please?

Pete

You could try the National Archives site to see if his Army records survive. i have been lucky and got two from the website and one by going to Kew and looking through the records

From his medal card, the first two numbers are for the Royal Warwickshire Reg, the third is for the Manchester Regiment.

This site has lists of joining dates for applicable to Regimental numbers:

No 6045 would have joined between 15th March 1898 and 13th February 1899; so it looks as if he was in the Army before WW1. If so, he would probably have been in the Army Reserve and have been called up to serve in WW1.

Hi Potty

I don't think my grandfather could have enlisted in the army in 1898/1899 as he would have been 8 or 9 years old then, he was born in September 1890.

The mystery deepens?
