just thought I would add I have recently had contact from some relatives who actually have our family bible, after 10-15 years of my own research its finally appeared. To say I was astounded and delighted is an understatement.

There are records written in it, one of which relates to a marriage which I've been looking for without joy for ten years.

Hang in there, you could be incredibly lucky one day!

I found the above on Ancestry but think

www.familysearch.org.uk

My aunty cleared out my grandparents house and actually THREW AWAY the enlarged photograph (about 90x60cm) of the double wedding of my grandparents and nan's sister with some of the family who later emigrated to Canada!!!
I'm still sad about it and granddad died in 1969

If the elderly parent lived with one of their children, it would probably have gone to that child - and so on.

Mine was found by the couple who bought my mum's house after she died - they ripped the fireplace out and my dad had used it to support the old back boiler!!! Fortunately it was all intact.

There is no simple answer to that question. Firstly do you know for sure that there was one? Although family bibles were quite common particularly in the 19th century not every family will have had one as not everyone could read.

If your family had one it would normally passed down to one of the children of the family but as far as I know there was no specific or common rule which dictated who it would be passed to.

In my own case I was extremely lucky to find a very distant cousin who had the bible started by my Great Great Grandmother. The chap who had it was, like myself, a fourth generation descendant. The irony was that when I obtained a copy of my 2x Gt Grandmothers will I discovered that she had actually willed the bible to my Great grandfather not his. Obviously my Gt Grandfather never received the bible probably because he was living a long distance away from her when she died so it was obviously retained by his sibling with whom their mother was living at the time of her death.

Good luck in tracing yours. They can be a treasure trove of family history.
