xDaisyx mentioned the London Gazette above, this is part of a website called Gazettes Online http://www.gazettes-online.co.uk/ which also covers the Edinburgh Gazette http://www.edinburgh-gazette.co.uk/ and the Belfast Gazette http://www.belfast-gazette.co.uk/

There's also www.london-gazette.co.uk/issues, which I have only used for R.A.F. in W.W.1, but I'm sure there must be more on there.

So sorry Jonesey...I nudged your tip of the day re Lancashire libraries and old newspapers for other members about a month ago sadly within hours your thread had vanished.

Just as a matter of interest I passed the information on to my friend in Australia not thinking that she would be able to join... imagine our surprise when her application was accepted!!

Many thanks again.

You can use your own library card, too :-)

I joined and received my library card within a week. It's great as I can trawl through so many newspapers free of charge and I've found a couple of unexpected items about some of my ancestors - I'd recommend it completely.

Visit Lancashire Libraries online and join. You do not have to live or work in Lancashire and its free. That will get you full free access to the British Library collection of 19th century newspapers. (National coverage)

To join all that you need to do is visit their site:

http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/libraries/borrower/join.asp

Fill in your details and you will be given a temporary log in number. Within a few days you will receive your membership card through the post which will give you access to their resources from your home computer. Just to reiterate membership is open to everyone no matter where you live and it is FREE.

Does anyone know the name of the site where you can view newspapers from the past, as mentioned recently by Gaye in the "Success Stories".

Thanks,
Barbara.
