Hi David,

I find it easier to use Ancestry's "old search" instead of their "new search". You can switch from one to the other (there is a button in the top right hand corner of the search page). I also click on "exact search" which gives fewer results but I find it easier to work through.

David, one more thing. I would advise starting to build your family tree as far as you know it first of all. This is because when you find records you are able to attach them to members of that tree.
I would start with one you know to start with.

Put in as little information as necessary. Sometimes if you put in too much information you don't get the right results. If you are looking for a birth just put in the name and the year you think the birth occurred +/- a couple of years and see what comes up.

If you want to give a name on here (one that isn't too recent as you shouldn't put details of people who may still be living on an open thread) someone will try to help you.

If you run your cursor over "search" you will see a drop-down menu, in which there is a "births, marriages and deaths" option.
Don't forget Freebmd which is sometimes easier to search 1837-1940-ish:
