Quite true

Hot Matches is not one of the things that you have paid for, even on the Standard Membership of £9.95 a year that so many of us have

It is part of the package available to ALL members including the free ones.

I was once told that Hot Matches looks through about 100 names, matching them against trees ........ if someone updates their tree, then the next search will start at the beginning again, so you'll get the same 100 names being searched.

It doesn't appear to work tree by tree ....... ie taking your tree and checking 100 names against the databank, then taking my tree and checking against the databank.

Far better and easier to enter the names individually in the Search Trees facility and do your own searching and contacting

In any case, after a certain point, you'll find that the ONLY Hot Matches you get are names provided by you to other people!

That's the point I've been at for the last 4 or 5 years.

I don't even bother to do more than a quick glance at the email that GR sends me now.

I don't know for sure but I suspect it only matches against a fixed number of other members trees. If it ran against the entire database if would never finish running.....! But surely, you are not interested in Hotmatches with members you already know about, only those who you don't know.

As Jan says, why not do your own matching? Most experienced members do so anyway. HotMatches does now and again turn up something new that I haven't spotted so is an added bonus, but not mission critical.

P.S. You haven't paid for HotMatches. As far as I am aware It is available free to all members, including Free Members

Fran, not quite sure why this is a problem? Just look for matches yourself then you can specify birthplace (I have some Smiths on my tree and if it picks up one one of those ...!)

Sylvia,

You have me perplexed.
I thought the whole idea was that it did go through my tree and find any matches. (most being not a real match just a name and birth year match)
Thats what I paid for.

I dont expect to have matches on all my family listed, but I do know that there are specific matches on GR already.
I just doubt that it selected 100 names in the first batch of matches.

eg for one of my hot matches, It shows we match on one person, though I know we have 4 generations of matching family.
Another person not matched with me yet has abt 6 generations of matching family.
A third relative has 3 generation of matching family.

Getting back to my original post, so far only 3 people were included in the hotmatches and most of those were not a real match.
Ok, not all the other names have been hot matched , but if it took 100 at a time, a lot should have been. I only have ~200 in the tree.

Fran

don't get your hopes up

Hot Matches doesn't work its way through your tree!

I thik I have received Hot Matches for about 50 of the 130 odd names in my tree (I keep only a very small tree on here) ....... and that tree has been on here since 2003!

Thanks for the info Inspector.

I dont think they got anywhere near 100 people from my tree in my first lot of matches.
I have been in contact with family members that are here already and viewed their trees. There should be many more matches even with only half my gedcom.
If its done alphabeticaaly it looks like only the first 21 or so were taken. Even then there are matches that seem to be missing.
It will be interesting in the next batch of matches to see who comes up.

Each time it runs, Hotmatches selects 100 names from your tree and attempts to match them with other members trees.

Therefore, you could receive 100 name matches with several different members- unlikely as that is - or none at all.

Next time it selects the next 100 names and so on.

Excuse me if tis has been posted before, but I cant find any answer to my query.

I recently uploaded a gedcom with ~200 people.
I recieved my hotmatches and reviewed them. 3 pages, but only for 3 names in my gedcom, surnames ending with A and B. Do I have to wait another 2 weeks to get the next three people matched, at this rate it will take a few years to get through the whole gedcom.

Fran
