One Name Study

Hi Mrs G

Thanks for the information. I have checked the Guild and the surname I was wanting to study has 1079 names according to their database but Ancestry and Family search have far more. I am aware that sometimes they are duplicated many times on Familysearch but their totals are in excess of 4000. Ancestry has about 1800. There are also spelling variations so that would increase the figures.

I am currently using FTM2005 for my tree but am not sure that would work so well for a ONS. I was thinking a basic Excel spreadsheet would be better.

If I joined the Guild are you in some way committed to the study? Do they place any sort of time-limit on you?

I would appreciate any advice you can give to get me started.

Thanks again
Beverley

Depends a lot on the name.

I'm doing a ONS through the Guild. And I work full time.

If you go to familysearch site and type in the name - tick the use exact spelling box - you can get a rough idea of the number of records available just on that site. So, mine is a total of 177 records (using exact spelling). If I start adding all the spelling variations etc it increases a bit more.

I have many more than 177 people in the ONS - probably about 2,000. The paperwork takes up 2 lever arch files and a shoe box of index cards.

I'd suggest therefore - as a rough guide - that my 177 X 10 = 1,770 - which is not far off my total. So you could try that to give you an idea of the numbers you might be dealing with. (I have yet to bring my data forward into the 20th century - a lot of it stops in the 1920s at the moment.)

I get the odd e-mail request but quite often it's me making the first contact with people so it does not have to take up a huge amount of time.

The initial time spent setting it up and organising it is time-consuming, but once you have a system maintaining it is no more onerous than doing your own tree.

I am vaguely considering doing a one name study but don't want to commit myself until I know how much is involved. As I work full-time, my available time is quite limited but I can normally find about 5 - 6 hours per week to spend on my family tree. I have been to the website (Guild of One Name Studies) and quite like the idea of a more structured analysis of information. Can anyone give me any suggestions or idea of the commitment required?
