It is also common to find that the certificate records the bride's name as follows:-

Sarah, lately (or latterly) Brown, formerly Smith, where Smith is her maiden name and Brown her previous married name.

I have seen examples where the GRO have indexed both names - all for 20th rather than 19th century marriages.

The GRO normally index a widow under her married surname, which is usually the name she commonly uses.
A local RO might index her under both her married surname and her MS - here's an example:

Marriages Dec 1870 (>99%)
AKERS Julia Letitia Preston 8e 848
BROWN Reuben Preston 8e 848

Lancashire Marriage indexes for the years: 1870

I've got one re-married under her maiden name, one re-married under her married name and another who just got re-married without beimg widowed or divorced. Just a subtle alteration of both parties middle names sufficed.

I'd agree with satnav - usually they marry under their previous married name ... however, there are bound to be exceptions to this so check under both names if you can't find her.

When a widow remarries could someone please tell me whether her original name ie birth name or her previous married name appears on the certificate?
