Nicola

ancestry every time!!

GR doesn't actually have any records ..... they just re-direct you to another site

The one big snag with that is that you cannot move from one page to another ....... so if you have a family split between two pages, you cannot move to see the other members

Nor can you make any alternative name changes to the transcript .... which you can do on ancestry or findmypast.

And I have occasionally the same experience on ancestry as you have had. I have no idea why it won't find one member of the family, but will find another!

I have that too sometimes, wonder if its a little glitch in the programming
Have sometimes come out of Ancestry then gone in again and it suddenly it finds the info .Its a little annoying when I am helping searches and post nothing found only to see others have found it so i go in again and it comes up !!

I put in the year then 2 to 5 years eitherside of it, like I said all the details I originally put in turned out to be correct. I have even tried searching without a year and same thing happens it comes up with nill results. Have also tried putting something in the keywords, like birthplace.

It just seems really strange.

thanks Nicola

When you say you put in a name and year do you mean a year of birth? If so I would just put in the name and county of birth (if you know it) as the way the census is taken means that the year of birth is often 1 year out (depending on whether the person has had their birthday that year or not by the time of the census).

I have access to the census records on Ancestry, but when I do a search for a name and year it keeps coming up with no results. I thought that maybe the surname was spelt incorrectly so did other searches and came up with nothing. I then tried 1 of the childrens names and I got the results straight away. When I looked at the parents names, everything was spelt correctly, this has happened to me on numerous occassions with different ancesters. This is a bit puzzling to me, does anyone know why when all the details are correct, the search facility comes up with nill results?

Thanks Nicola
