I should think it quite possible that the father registered the v. early death - and only later did someone point out a legal need to register the birth as well

No it looks like a neighbour registered the death, as the informant lived in the same street and i cannot recognise her as a family member.

I know it's a sad situation but I originally started my family tree for my nana who unfortunately died last May.

She lost her mum when she was two, and her dad remarried and he no longer wanted his childrem so they were brought up my various family members so she didn't know very much about her familly - she thought that there might have been a brother (she is one of three girls) but couldn't be certain.

This info comes a little too later for my nana and her sisters, but it's nice to put closure to a an unknown.

Hi Joanne,

Glad you got it sorted out. Just out of curiosity - did the father also register the death?

Confirmation received;
The death of the infant (9 days old, whooping cough) was registered on the 30 September 1921, and the birth was registered on the 17th October 1921.

Thanks to all

I will let you know when the death cert arrives (should be Friday).

The father registered the birth.

Joanne - just curious - were the two informants different then?

Well the birth certificate proved who I thought it was; registered in October but was actually born and died in September hence the death registration was in Q3 and just ordered the death cert to prove it

Or you could contact the relevant register office to ask the staff if they would mind verifying it for you; I did this on two occasions and was fortunate enough to receive help from both register offices.

I have seen the death of a child registered before the birth in this way.

If a child dies at the end of one quarter you only have about 5 days in which to register a death so this is usually done immediately and will be in the appropriate quarter. However you have six weeks in which to register a birth so it is possible that the birth is not registered until the next quarter.

I don't suppose it happens very often as it would be more usual to register both together but I have seen it.

Could it be possible for an infant death to be registered before the birth?
I have a bith in qtr 4 1921, which matches all known information the infant is said to have died, but the only death I can find is in qtr 3 1921.
Thanks Jo
