People on board ships may not have been recorded on the right day.

The censuses before 1841 and after 1911 weren't held on those dates throughout the UK. For the inter-war censuses, Northern Ireland should be excluded. They had censuses on 18/4/1926 (like rest of Ireland) and 28/2/1937 (rest of Ireland was 26/4/1936). The 3 dates above are all Sundays.

Hope you saw my census thread :-)

For the exceptions, try googling ... certainly in Buckinghamshire there are earlier ones, some that were kept by a schoolmaster. And there is the Buckinghamshire 1798 Posse Comitatus, available on CD - http://www.genfair.co.uk/product_list.php?sid=40&page=5 - " In February 1798, with the imminent threat of invasion by French forces, returns were ordered to be made of all able-bodied men between the ages of fifteen and sixty years who were not already serving in a military capacity. Lists were also to be made of the numbers of draught horses, waggons and carts and their owners and of those occupying wind and water corn mills."
And this site - http://met.open.ac.uk/genuki/big/eng/BKM/GreatMarlow/index.html = describes "An ecclesiastical census was carried out throughout England on 30 March 1851 to record the attendance at all places of worship."

From 1841-1911 they all fall on Sunday (officially it's Sunday at midnight), and from 1851-1911 it's always late March / early April, but not 1841 (nor 1921/6 when it comes round)

Were they conducted at random or on a set date each year?
It would be helpful in calculating ages more accurately. Any help much appreciated.
