Has anyone on here done a family history research course?
What did it entail? How much was it, was it worth it? And has anyone gone on to be a professional researcher??

Hi Shazzlou,

I haven't done a course and I suppose many on here haven't either, however it may help if you are just starting out?

I have come across so many threads on here where the poster has had a "Specialist" look into their family history and have either got it completely wrong or have been unable to find the correct info and yet many of the "helpers" have come up trumps with the correct info and all this was done for free by them............ so I suppose what I am trying to say is that often you don't need to splash the cash just need to establish the facts known and help the "helpers" when they are asking for info back from you.

Also there is an unbelievable amount of "Tips" posted on the boards to help others search... just to name 1 in particular; Jonesey, he must have at least a dozen on the Tips Board.......... so reading through them can help you get around the little niggles our ancestors liked to put in our way.

Best regards, Dee x

Mark Herber - Ancestral Trails. Should be available at your library ... excellent book.

I did a certificate of Higher Education course through Birmingham University.
It took 2 years 3 hours per week plus personal study time.
I actually did 2 courses. The 1st on Local History which I thoroughly enjoyed & found very informative. The 2nd ,Family History I gave up after year 1 because I wasn´t really learning anything new. The problem was that I had already been researching for 7 or 8 years, so knew most of the basics.
The courses weren´t cheap (I think about 400 per year) but that was 10 years ago, so it will be much more by now I would imagine.
Although you need some previous knowledge it´s probably better if you are reasonably new to it.
