Hi

Not sure if I am posting this in the right place. But does anyone have any idea's on what the name Ginny could have been short for? I thought I was looking for a virginia but having found all the children to my great grandparents the only girls who live long enough were Jane and Mary. Mary is my great grandmother and it was her sister who was called Ginny. Could Ginny be short for Jane?

Not specifically, but maybe it was 'Janey' and with an accent sounded like Ginny and that version stuck? .

My grandmother was Mary Jane. After starting down this genealogy path I came across a distant relative on GR who claimed to have known her as Aunt Ginny - something I had not heard before.

I mentioned this to one of my aunts - and she confirmed that 'Mother' was known to some as Aunt Ginny.

So, yes, Ginny can be for Jane. To put this into context, in case it's regional, this was in Newcastle / Tyne in the early 1950s.

Yeah this was in Newcastle in the 40's-50's. Thats great! Took me ages to track down the information as my grandfather had no information other than his mothers name and that he had a Aunt Ginny.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Definitely a derivative of Jane - I have three Janes in my tree known as Ginnie.
