Ada Emily Woods married John Quick Tregembo Sep 1884 in Helston Cornwall.
She was born Sep 1864.in Kingston, Surrey. (family info says she was born in Surrey.)
Am I barking up the right tree when I found Ada woods on the 1871 census in Kingston with parents
William and Mary and
sister Elizabeth and brother Arthur?
She called her first child Elizabeth
Is this likely to be the right family or shold I get Ada's marriage/birth cert?
I wonder how she ended up in Cornwall?
thanks for any advice on how to proceed
Jill

I found the possible birth on the IGI site -

http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html

The other information I found on Ancestry and on the FreeBMD site -

To find Ada Emily's parents for certain, you will need to get her birth certificate.

The information I have posted is only 'possibles'.

unless Ada lied about her age (not unknown!) she was over 21 in 1884 so should have been born before 1864

Thanks so much Choccy - I watch and learn! I appreciate the instruction as much as the info so that I can do it for myself next time.
thanks for that Ann - what is Cornwall opc????

lancashireAnn

lancashireAnn Report 23 Aug 2010 15:11

opc - online parish clerk sites. There are about 8 of these and they are transcriptions of baptisms/marriages & death church records. they are by no means complete but can provide info which saves spending money on a certificate. As in the marriage details I have given you - all the details you would find on the certificate - except the actual church name

to find which counties are covered just google 'online parish clerks'.

incidentally, as the 1891 census says Ada born in Surrey c1864 she was probably born 1863 which makes her 21 on marriage. As it was not compulsory for parents to register a child's birth - it was the registrar's job to track them down until 1874(?) - her birth may not have been registered

I never knew that so thanks a lot, Ann.
I have found what I believe to be Ada's birth in Sep qtr 1864 registered in Kingston, surrey. I wish I knew how she got to Cornwall!
Her husband, John was a fisherman and they did sail far away from home I know and his father was on bigger ships.
There were also quite a lot of Tregembo family around the London area so perhaps that was an element in the Cornwall connection.
Perhaps we shall never know. An elderly relation is in a home now with her faculties going, but she still has some early memory which I may be able to tap and then check.
Thanks again
Jill
