Particularly for Rutland Belle. Many years ago I was an Examiner for a professional body. I was the only woman out of 8 Examiners. I once asked the question, in a meeting, how we were expected to find the time to perform a certain administrative task and all 7 men answered together "No problem, my wife does it for me"!!!!

Allison
If you know where this persons family were living at the time of his death, there might be an article about his death in the local newspapers in that district.
They are usually stored on microfilm and can be viewed at a local library or records office.
The reports frequently show a photograph of the dead serviceman. You will need to contact the nearest library and archives site.

At my local library I found details of a letter sent to a relatives wife from a officer in his unit. It told her exactly how he died and there was a photograph of him. He died from a single bullet wound to the chest.
You might strike luckly. But in some cases it might take up to a year for somebody to confirm the death. In my relatives case, his death was confirmed 7 months after he died.
Regards
Andrew.

Ok everyone. Thank you so much for looking. It was worth a try. Would have been nice to know what they looked like, as in height etc. But thanks for trying everyone.

There are nearly 3000 records for William Wood, to help search would really need William's year of birth.

Allison if you are lucky you may find some service records but bear in mind that over half of them were destroyed by fire during the blitz in WW2, if you do find any records they can give a lot of info. If you want me to look on Ancestry for you I can do that

If i put the name and rank and number of a soilder, is there any way of finding out more information. I have gathered a lot, but wondered what other information is given on ancestry, as i don't hold it. I have his service numbers and place of death and informant, just wondered.
thanks
