I am looking at the 1901 census for District Eastern Hospital in Hackney, London. There is a long list of people which includes numerous children. My rellie is included in about 2 pages of 'servants' and the rest - adults and children but mostly children - are 'patients'.

Would this have been a workhouse or a hospital where my rellie worked?

Thanks for that Shirley.

I have trouble getting my head around the workhouse/hospital concept but I'm getting there.

That is very sad that there were so many children in one hospital and, probably most had smallpox. One child was four years old and classified as 'mad'.

Makes you think, doesn't it?

I assume my rellie was working in the hospital then.
