2011 CENSUS

I thought it was as illegal NOT to return a census form. As for making the census available online, I can't help but think, given this country's ineptitude at keeping online material secure, I wouldn't want to do it that way.

Good idea, Cheryl, though!

either way we can hopefully get to keep a copy for our records.

Joy - that is the site where I have registered to help with the census. Hopefully I will get chance to help.

The next census of England and Wales will take place in 2011 and includes a number of new approaches designed to improve census return rates in all areas and with all population groups. This includes:

wide engagement in the community with the help of local authorities, representatives of target population and accessibility groups and a national publicity campaign

post-out of all household questionnaires (around 25 million), based on a newly developed national address register

online completion: people will be able to complete and submit their answers online or fill in and return the paper questionniare

questionnaire tracking and targeted field follow-up: to identify and follow up households which have not returned a questionnaire

Not sure if the next one is online as they are taking registration for the jobs. If it is we may be able to save it and print anyway.
I wish I had done it before, however 10 years ago I hadn't started my family history research so it didn't enter my head.
I can't remember the questions they asked but I wish they would ask how many cars/motorcycles you have at your address. It would be interesting to see just how many cars everyone has. lol

We kept a copy of the last one that we completed - wish we had done so for previous ones, too :-)
Next year's may be done online, so I have read.

I have had an idea today. Those of you that have filled in a census in the past know that it asks lots of questions. The census that we can currently access only shows a little info. When I have completed the census next year I am going to photocopy it and store it with my family tree stuff, then it is there to see in the future (in full). That way my granchildren can see it before they get old. 100 years is a long time to wait.
I am also copying my parents and in-laws too.
