Please does anyone know a good site for ship's passenger lists for people emigrating to the USA in about the late 1800' to 1910. Would be very grateful for any help. Many thanks.

There's one for everyone who entered via Ellis Island in New York, (the name escapes me , but someone on here will know) and another for all routes covering the whole world and most dates at www.immigrantships.net

It is an ongoing site and not yet complete, but still very good.

Ellis Island have records starting 1892 and you can see the originals. You have to register but it's free.

Thanks very much Margaret. My grandmother was in America I think in the Boston area round about 1906 visiting/living with relatives. The family do not appear on the 1911 census so they must all have been there. The family name was Sykes - father James, his wife Martha Jemima (nee Exley) and daughters Ethel and Florence. I am not sure which part of the family they were with could have been either Sykes or Exley. Any information much appreciated.

There's this family on the 1910 census, not Boston, Mass., but Monson, Mass.

Albert Sykes, head, 47, born England, married 13 years, emigrated 1888
Martha A., wife, 43, born England, married 13 years, emigrated 1875
Florence, dau, 1, born Massachusetts

No, not this one!
Trying to get some idea of dates here.
Guess this is the marriage:

It would appear that Martha is a widow in 1901 so she may have remarried by 1911

Thanks so much Margaret for all the hard work, I must have missed Ethel and co in the 1911 census I probably searched for James. Could it be possible that Albert was James' uncle I'll have a look at my tree and see if James' father's siblings are listed. She brought back from America a pair of vases made in Boston so that is maybe where I have got that idea from

Your welcome Patricia..... I have had similar problems over the years.... Always a good idea to look for all known names of family if not found under presumed head. Happy hunting.
