An occupation given on the 1881 census in a 'posh' area of Wimbledon is "Russia" merchant. The gentleman is NOT Russian!
Does anyone have any idea what that could have been please?
thanks for any help

Jillian. maybe if you post details on here we can have a look and check what it says? If it's very clear I would assume he was involved with trade with Russia.

Thanks for that Jan and glitterbaby. You are close with Russia Merchant office. The name is Ronel? Samuel Dean b. Islington living at The Priory.
His family are followed by several dwellings with servants living there. I am wondering if Ada Woods b Kings Ditton, Surrey age 16 living in The Priory stables as dom serv could be attached to this merchant along with the coachman's family she lives with.

Looking at 1881 image, in view of above, looks like Rosser.

SylviaInCanada Report 29 Aug 2010 23:34

It does look as if his first name on the image of the 1881 census is actually ROSSEL, not Ronel ...... so maybe an alternative name change should be sent in

and it does look as if it says Russia Merchant

His wife is down as Merchant's Wife

I think it just means that he was a merchant whose main business was in trading with Russia

he didn't have to be Russian to do that.

just an entrepeneur :))))))

Looking at your other question re Ada Woods

Thye have a lot of servants living in in the Priory

I think it more likely that Ada was General Domestic Servant to the Frederick Wyall, the Coachman, and his wife.

They did have rather a lot of children ........ and Domestic Servants came pretty cheap in those days.

The 1891 Census image shows Rosser's occupation to have been first written as Bridle Merchant, then Bridle was crossed out, and Brush noted

so it became Brush Merchant

it is Brush Merchant in 1901

and guess what?

It was family business!!
