Change of birth name

Hi! I am trying to trace a relative who was adopted at birth. I have been told there is a good chance that the relative may have had their name changed by the adoptive parents. Is there any way of finding this out? Any assistance would be much appreciated.

Thankyou

The surname would automatically change to that of the adoptive parents.

if the adoption was indeed 'at birth' the odds are that the forename (IF one was given) would also be changed

You would have to search using the birth name. If the person is looking for their birth family this is the name they would use. There is a national adoption register (just google it) for just this purpose.
There is also Facebook and friends Reunited, worth a go. If a reasonably uncommon name you might even try googling that, people have a result doing this from time-to-time.
Basically, as you might expect, you can only find someone who wishes to be found.
