http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

This site is very useful for looking up births, marriages and deaths.

It is free as the work is done by volunteers but only goes up to 1920's ish

Civil registration began in England and Wales in 1837

Thank you ever so much SometsetGirl I am cetian he is not alive. I have also found a death in 1955 which would appear to be him the real confusion i have found here was that William Henry was known as Bert hence no-one knew of a William Henry. However, with the help Lindsey I have found his marriage to a Vera Bates who my mum knew to have married a Bert. I believe he was known as Bert to differentiate between him and his father who was also called William Henry

Thank you EVER so much for your help

I have just been in touch with my mum and she says the death you suggested will be of her uncle Albert as he died the year she was born Thank you once again :)

Something of the pancreas, so I'm told. The whole family was not blessed. Enid died age 25, William age 38, Bertha age 1, Albert age 20 and apparentley there was another child Betty who as a child ate some gooseberries and contracted a disease which she died of!

Thanks ever so much Janette!

In fact there were only 2 children Vera my great-grandmother and Barbara who lived to a fair old age!
