Hi, Can anyone please advise me on how to look up an adoption record pre 1929. The lady in question was born 1887, she is on the 1891 census under her birth name but adopted by the 1901 census. Thanking you in advance. Ros

Thank you very much for your speedy reply, i had a feeling it was going to be a major problem. oh well, just have to think of another way! many thanks again. Ros. one last question : the meaning of informal adoptions would this mean an agreement between the true parents and those taking on the adoption, ie no sort of formal paperwork at all.

I even know of an unmarried mother and her new husband paying a couple to bring up the unmarried mother's child. I am told they paid £50, which was a lot of money back in about 1890.

Ros, just out of interest - how do you know she was "adopted"? I assume you unable to find her in 1901? I am just thinking they might have kept her forenames if she was taken in when this old, that is at least 4 yrs. If unusual name/birthplace you might be in with a chance though a bit of a long shot I know.

I assumed that Ros had found her on the 1901 with Adopted next to her name

I have seen that on various censuses

I think it was sometimes done to make it clear that this child was not a birth child.

Oh I see, silly me! But I am wondering in that case what Ros is looking for?
