Birth certificate

On FreeBMD I've come across a possible relative.
Phillip Downs London (City) 1947 see (M.48)
Same again 1948 but with no mother's name.
Scanned the original but it appears to be a 'late entry'
Why isn't a named mother shown ?
I would like to order this birth cert but cannot afford to waste
unnecessary money if mother is not shown. Any ideas please?

Is this the 1948 which gives a maiden name? This is from Ancestry

Name: Phillip Downs
Mother's Maiden Surname: Dunn
Date of Registration: Jan Feb Mar 1948
Registration district: London C
Registration county: Greater London, Middlesex
Volume Number: 5d
Page Number: 215

Ancestry's transcription is flawed. It can be seen from the image for both 1947q3 and 1948q1 that no mother's MS is given. (Dunn refers to the preceding entry for Patricia, just like Ancestry's Richardson in 1947q1 refers to the preceding entry for Peter.)

Try calling the register office where the birth was registered. They can be very helpful. If you ask the question 'why was mothers name not entered' They may offer to have a look and give you the info over the phone, or at least enough info for you to know it is the right one.

Sorry for not answering sooner folks but yes that was the problem I found with the 1947/48 entry you've mentioned.
Thanks also Cheryl - I will have to find out where the London City Register Office and see what they come up with before I do order/pay for this certificate.
My thanks to you for your help.

regards
