Hi James,

By doing a free search I have found a James Purves born in 1869 in

Edrom / Berwickshire.

If you want to see the original image you will need to go to

scotlandspeople.gov.uk and register to search and then buy credits.

The images give you a lot of info such as for a marriage:-

Bride and Grooms names/ages/ addresses/occupations/Parents names

and Fathers occupations and even the names of witnesses.

It really is much cheaper and quicker than when your ancestors come

from England and Wales!

Hope this is him.

James Purves born 16 April 1869 at Allerton, in the parish of Edrom, Berwick.
Fathers name: William Purves a Tailor.
Mother: Margaret Melrose.
William and Margaret were married on the 5 May 1857 at Allerton.
The birth was registered on the 19 April at Edrom by J.B. Henderson, registrar

Once again, thanks so much Foggy, Masami and Cathy. I am certain that this is the person I was looking for (my great grandfather). James Purves, shown as 1 year old in the 1871 census, later moved down to my home village of Esh Winning in Co Durham, England, and marriage and death records record him as Purvis - similar confusion arose with his son, my grandfather. The 1901 English census shows the great grandfather as being born in Reston, Berwickshire, which apparently is less than a mile from Edrom, which seems to confirm this is our man!

Many thanks for all your hard work - very much appreciated. I had done the English census and marriage/death lookups and decided that Alice Caroline Woodard was the lady.
