Thanks Cathy - that's exactly what I needed. And thanks to all of you for your time and interest!

The problem with knowing which year is which, Margaret, is that I printed off quite a few (Davis being such a common name) "on spec" with a view to studying them later to decide which was the right family. My husband wanted the computer at the time.

If you know the YOB of one of the people add that to their age.

EG, Elizabeth is shown on the image in 1851 as being 18; you know she was born 1833. 1833 + 18 + 1851.

Does this help?

Thank you Margaret - or should I call you eagle-eye? !

I would be really grateful if someone could have a look at an 1851 census image to see if they can read it - it's very faint and my eyesight isn't up to it - even with a magnifying glass!

The name is Elizabeth Davis. Estimated year of birth: 1833. Address: King St Brighton, district: Brighton, The Palace. Birthplace: Windsor, Berks.

I have these details from the transcript. She is shown as the grand -daughter of the householder. What I would like, if possible, is the details of the rest of the household.

Incidentally, does anyone know how you can tell, by looking at a printout of a census page, which census it refers to? I have some I printed out and forgot to write on them, as I usually do, and now don't know which years they refer to. The 1841 is easy enough to recognise, but after that I am lost!
