Well done Barbara, thank you very much. They certainly experienced a drop in fortunes in those 10 years.

If 1861 correct than the 1871 which you wondered about looks right.

Well the answer to above was easy - apparently the sugar refineries were in German hands in this period and they preferred to import their own workers - so John's occupation was common for a German in England at the time. I have also found a German ancestry society on line which I can look into.

There's still mystery though with this family - they have totally disappeared from the 1861 census and I've tried every variation of the name I can think of - Miller, Muller, Mellor etc and no trace of a marriage. This is going to keep me going for years.

I think it will be interesting to find out why people were migrating to England from Germany during that period so that is where I will focus on next. I'll post on here any interesting findings for others in a similar situation.

If you try to trace John Peter back remember his name would probably be Johanes or something like that.

WOW Barbara thank you very much indeed, I think you have it. Oh what on earth would my Grandad say if he knew that he was from German stock!! Good job he didn't know...

Thanks again.

Right thank you both. Looks like my trail has run cold doesn't it. How very tantalising!

Lots of families from Germany and Poland changed their names to Miller for some reason. There is a JOhn Miller born Germany 1819 on the 1861 but it states him being unmarried.

PS I have tried looking for John Millar in the census too but no joy.

My g-g grandfather was John Miller, born in 1853. He is easy to identify in the 1881 census - he is living on Bard Street in Sheffield and is employed as a furnaceman. Going back to the 1871 census, there is only one John Miller in Sheffield born in 1853 - he is a lodger in the Park area of Sheffield - not far from Bard Street so this would seem to be him. In the 1861 census I can't find any John Miller born around his year of birth. Nor can I find a birth of a John Miller in 1853 yet in later census he always gives his birth as being 1853 Sheffield. Could anyone help track him down? I have a note that his father was John Peter Miller but no other details and none for his mother. Intreguingly, in the 1871 census he is lodging with a man also called John Miller who is old enough to be his father and was born in Germany. Could that be his father? Might they have wanted to cover up that John Jr was born in Germany for some reason and that is why there is no trace before 1871?

If anyone could think of any other leads to follow that would help. Would John's marriage certificate have to tell the truth about his birth or could they have covered up details on there?

Thanks
Sarah
