Thanks Gerry.

She was brought up in Macclesfield. So I will search for that.

If you are stuck, contact Social Services and ask their advice - they will be able to tell you what to do.

Thank you Gerry, but that link only seems to lead to a small minority of adoption agencies.

I typed in the area, Cheshire, and it only gave me a Catholic adoption site. Am I doing something wrong?

Your cousin's wife is quite right.

Official adoptions started in 1927 and records are kept by GRO.

After an adoption has been granted the child is placed on the Adopted Children Register in the adoptive name. The original birth certificate is then amended to show the word 'Adopted'.

Only the adopted person has the legal right to access adoption records. Check out this website www.adoptionsearchreunion.org.uk click into locating records, type in area of birth and she will get the name of who to write to and apply for her original birth certificate and how to apply for her adoption file. The website gives great information.

Cheers Gerry

Went to a family funeral today, and people got interested in my research. The wife of a cousin said "Well you won't find anything about me cos I was adopted". She is 73 now. Was adopted at age 18 months, so about Dec 1938. So would there be adoption records for her, and how would she go about finding them please.

Margaret
